Techstination feature for Wednesday, March 16, 2005

Printing better pictures at home. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. A lot of consumers have been snapping up small printers that do a credible job with 4 by 6 photos. Kodak has its EasyShare Printer Dock….and Epson's PhotoMate Personal Photo Lab has become so popular, the company says it was the overall best selling ink jet printer during the December holiday shopping season. But if you are serious about making bigger, professional quality prints at home, Epson's Stylus Photo R1800 printer is worth taking a look at. Group product manager Fabia Ochoa…

"It uses an 8 color ultra chrome ink set which is pigment based. That means you get beautiful rich colors using a hi-fi red and blue ink set that will last for generations. In fact, it'll last a hundred to two hundred years in a frame. Also, this machine is extremely fast. It can produce 11 by 14s in just one minute and 51 seconds."

It's capable of making photo quality prints up to 13 inches wide by 44 inches long. And the cost of printing those enlargements at home is pretty favorable when compared with what you'd pay for professional printing…

"It's going to cost you less than a dollar for ink and paper combined for a glossy 8 by 10 print."

As with some other less expensive Epson printers, it can also print on specially coated CDs and DVDs. The R1800 lists for about 550 dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
