Digital Media... You Can Take it With You

Techstination feature for Wednesday, March 23, 2005

When it comes to digital media…you can take it with you. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Chances are you have a hard drive full of digital photos, digital music and perhaps your latest vacation or birthday video. Now you can use all kinds of devices….just about anything with a Web browser….cell phones, PDAs or other PCs…to access those files. Orb Networks….which had initially been available only for computers running Microsoft's Media Center operating system, is now out for the much more mainstream Windows XP. If you have a TV tuner card, you can remotely watch live or recorded shows. Or, says Orb VP Joe Harris, you can monitor a Web cam in real time…

"Simply plugging in a Web cam, it's as easy as just doing that in order to get the Web cam to work. And it just shows up automatically as a channel in your TV line up. If you don't have a tuner card, you can still use Orb and obviously won't get live TV."

Keep in mind you need a high speed …either cable or DSL… Internet connection on the Orb connected PC…..and a remote device with a browser. And the faster the connection speed there…the better the experience…

"The beauty of it is, we scale the delivery depending upon the bandwidth and we'll adjust to give you the best picture possible on whatever device you have."

Without having to install any special software. There's a free trial at Orb.com. Subscriptions cost 10 dollars a month or 80 dollars a year. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
