Computer Security Advice...From Kevin Mitnick

Computer security advice…from Kevin Mitnick. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Mitnick was once called the most wanted computer criminal in U.S. history. He spent five years in prison for his crimes. These days, he's on the other side…running a company called Defensive Thinking. He gets paid to tell companies where there computer systems are vulnerable. For everyday consumers who are concerned about online shopping and banking and increases in identity theft…Mitnick offers this advice…

"I believe that people should embrace the Internet and use it for its full potential. The way to eliminate 90 percent of the hacker threat out there is to run a personal firewall. Not Microsoft's firewall, but a more resilient firewall like Zone Alarm that you can get for free on Zonelabs.com. Run anti-virus software. Everyone's heard of McAfee and Symantec and there are others out there."

And, he adds, keep virus definitions up to date on a daily basis if possible. The latest battleground is cell phones…with more of them being equipped with Bluetooth wireless capability…

"If you're running Bluetooth on your cell phone, I would turn it off, because it's quite trivial for an attacker to steal your address book. And I predict we're going to see more worms and malicious software that attacks wireless mobility devices."

Kevin Mitnick, whose latest book chronicling the exploits of hackers is called The Art of Intrusion. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
