Sony's Grand Plan for the PSP

Techstination feature for Friday, April 1, 2005

Sony's grand plan…for the PlayStation Portable. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It's been a week since game players lined up in the middle of the night to be the first U.S. customers to buy Sony's PSP. The CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, Kaz Hirai says more units are on the way to try to meet demand. The PSP is priced at 249 dollars…and if your strategy is to wait until the holidays hoping for a price cut….Hirai says…

"We're very comfortable with the 249 dollar price point that we've established for the PSP and I see that price continuing for the holidays this year." The device includes WiFi wireless technology for game play. Will there eventually be Web browsing, messaging or email? "That really depends on the application that the content providers want to bring to the consumers and if the pure Web browsing is something that the consumers are looking for, there's really no reason why that won't be available."

Although Hirai says Sony itself has no plans to create those applications. What the company clearly has more plans for…is the UMD disc format the PSP uses for games and movies…

"Initially our plan is to establish the UMD format in the eyes of the consumers through the PSP. And once we do establish that format, there's nothing in the works at this point in time, but I see no reason why other devices that take advantage of the UMD will be coming out in the future."
