Content Filtering For Cell Phones

Techstination feature for Thursday, April 7, 2005

Content filters on cell phones. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. With new services such as photo messaging, video clips and video streaming arriving on cell phones, parents may have concerns about what may show up on the screens their kids are carrying around. The adult entertainment industry is eyeing those higher speed cell phone networks as a new opportunity to distribute their content….and E. Y. Snowden, chief executive of the Boston Communications Group says carriers may find the business too lucrative to resist. So the Boston Communications Group has created a filtering service that cell phone companies can offer customers. Snowden tells us…

"What we've introduced is now a suite of capabilities that let parents have the opportunity to manage exactly what and how their children may see content. So it's a product that includes some of the historical capabilities where you can simply deny bad Web sites, known Web sites. But what we've introduced is the first real time filter that actually digitally looks at the content and uses very sophisticated, proprietary logic rules to determine whether something digital going through to that phone is actually pornography or hate or violence oriented content and we can block that in real time."

It will be up to carriers to decide how much it will charge for the add on service. Some, says Snowden, may opt to include it with family cell phone plans. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
