Next Generation Wireless Network

Techstination feature for Thursday, April 21, 2005

Verizon's next generation high speed network. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It has only been a few months since Verizon Wireless introduced handsets that use the company's high speed data network…called EVDO. Customers can watch unlimited streaming video clips and play games using Verizon's Vcast service for about fifteen dollars a month. But planning for the next generation network is already underway. It's called EVDO Revision A. When will it arrive? The company's chief technology officer, Dick Lynch…

"We will be doing some trials with our vendors sometime next year. And if you want my prognostication, I'll tell you that revision A will be fairly common place in 2007."

The bad news is that to take advantage of it, customers, even those who are buying expensive EVDO capable handsets today, will need to buy new cell phones again…

"That's true, for those who want to take advantage of it. It's not going to be something that everyone is going to have a need for right away. The current EVDO has a downlink speed that averages in the 4, 5, 600 kilobit range, we advertise 3 to 500. The next generation is going to provide an uplink that is similar in terms of speed."

Which will enable all kinds of new applications…including wireless voice over IP, the sending of multi-megapixel photos and video over cell phones. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
