Smarphone Navigation For Free... (Not here)

Techstination feature for Thursday, April 28, 2005

An in-car navigation system…for free. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Sorry…you won't find it in this country. But in the U.K….T-Mobile is throwing in free navigation capability…when customers buy phones with Microsoft's SmartPhone technology. The Co-Pilot Live software was developed by ALK Technologies…which has been selling navigation software and hardware for PDAs, laptops….and devices used by the transportation industry for years. Founder Alain Kornhauser says the U.S. lags far behind Europe when it comes to awareness and use of GPS navigation…

"T-Mobile's doing it in the U.K. and it looks like T-Mobile International is very interested in doing it and if T-Mobile International is interested in doing it, maybe T-Mobile USA will be interested in doing it. Satellite navigation, or the turn by turn business in the United States, has not had much traction." Why do you think that is? "We're a third world nation technologically? We're way behind Europe and way behind Japan and probably way behind China."

Kornhauser, who is also a Princeton University professor, says there is more demand for navigation systems, from women drivers. The Co-Pilot Live software for Smartphones with a Bluetooth GPS receiver, sells for about 350 dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
