Photo Stamps are Back

Techstination feature for Tuesday, May 3, 2005

Photo stamps…are back. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The U.S. Postal Service has agreed to give it another try. For a brief period last year, less than two months, the Postal Service allowed Stamps.com to print personalized photo stamps. While more than two and a half million orders came in, there were some issues that arose, with some people ordering stamps that were what could be called inappropriate. Stamps.com CEO Ken McBride says this new trial with the Postal Service, which begins May 17th, is scheduled to last a year…

"Go to PhotoStamps.com, upload a digital photograph or image. And you can customize the look and feel. You can choose one of ten border colors to match your image. You can choose different mail denominations, so anything from 23 cents for a postcard to 37 cents for regular one ounce first class. Each sheet contains 20 individual photo stamps and costs 16 dollars and 99 cents for 37 cent stamps."

More than double what ordinary stamps cost. About the kinds of images allowed, McBride says….

"We're not accepting any news worthy or notorious images or controversial images. So obviously, no nudity, no controversial or other images like that. Keep it family oriented, is the main focus of the product."

After the startup date, McBride says orders will typically take 3 to 5 days to process. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
