Apple Vs. Microsoft Again

Techstination feature for Friday, May 6, 2005

Apple versus Microsoft…again. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. More than a year ahead of Microsoft's scheduled release of the next version of Windows, code-named Longhorn, Apple is out with a major upgrade to Mac OS X. The new release, called Tiger, has a variety of new features, but the one that is getting the most attention is Spotlight. It's a built in search system that can quickly locate files of all types. It's similar to what Microsoft has planned for Longhorn. Despite Apple's edge over the next year, Microsoft Windows group product manager Greg Sullivan tells us…the world's biggest software maker isn't concerned. In fact it's trying to boost sales of Windows XP with a new start something ad campaign…

"It's one of the unique things about our model and our role in the PC industry, is that you have such a broad choice of devices that you can run Windows on. Everything from the ultra-mobile, super lightweight tablet PCs, all the way up to some very innovative digital media center PCs. So just the breadth of hardware and software that runs on Windows is something that we're very proud of. And it's highghted in that start something campaign."

Even though Apple has become number one in the portable digital music player business with its iPods and iTunes, it has not gained much market share in its computer business. The market research firm IDC says only about 2 percent of the personal computers sold globally last year were made by Apple. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
