SAT Prep on a Handheld Device

Techstination feature for Monday, May 9, 2005

A pocket sized electronic device parents may want their teenagers to have. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. While Sony's Playstation Portable and Nintendo's DS are the hot new handheld game machines, parents may favor the latest device from Franklin Electronic Publishers. It has teamed up with the Princeton Review to make a handheld SAT tutor. Marketing director Chris Burghardt…

"The Pocket Prep for the New SAT is designed to be a complete portable tutor for the SAT. With the idea of offering not just the prep, but also test recording, so students can record their tests on the go and most importantly, get feedback both with instant scoring and diagnostic reports to help identify areas where they can study more efficiently and spend time in areas that will help improve their scores."

Unlike test preparation software that runs on PCs, Burghardt says students are more likely to use the handheld device because they're drawn to electronic devices…and the portability makes it available when they have free time. It sells for about 180 dollars. Can it replace books and test prep courses?

"It's designed to be a complete prep, so someone could use this instead of using a book or going to a course. But we also feel that the best way to prepare is to take advantage of every single way you can prepare."

The device may not be the best tool for helping to prepare for the new essay portion of the SATs, but it does provide tips and a grammar guide. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
