"about two years ago we shipped a single mobile phone with a single mobile operator and today we've got 40 device maker partners and 68 mobile operators in 48 countries. What you're going to continue to see with Windows Mobile devices is the ability to do more while you're on the go. From adding features that you can use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth on a device, but also being able to be much more productive on a device than you've ever been able to do so before with Office applications, PowerPoint, the ability to do more than just simple email. They'll be able to view attachments."
Starkweather says a variety of new SmartPhones will arrive between now and the end of the year…
"For example, the Samsung SGH i300, which will be the market's first phone with a hard drive. And that hard drive will allow you to store entire music and digital photo libraries and be able to enjoy those while you're on the go."
Whether Microsoft can take business away from PalmOne, which is now out with the Treo650 for all of the major carriers in the U.S., including Verizon, remains to be seen. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
