An Overload of Power Adaptors

Techstination feature for Wednesday, May 25, 2005

An overload of power adaptors. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. At home or on the road these days…electrical outlet space is at a premium. Cell phones, PDAs, notebook computers, camcorders, MP3 players, handheld game machines and other devices all need to be plugged in to recharge their batteries. Often…they use oversized transformers…that you need to carry with you when traveling. A company called Mobility Electronics has created a solution with its iGo line of universal adaptors. CEO Charles Mollo…

"It allows you to save a tremendous amount of carry space. When you run around with five adaptors and lots of cords it's quite inconvenient. But it's also a savings and a value add for the consumer because they have one device and as they get new electronic devices they simply have to purchase a little tip, which is 9.95, instead of the whole adaptor. But the biggest benefit is the convenience of having one solution for everything."

The top of the line iGo EverywherePower 7500 sells for about 140 dollars and can power or charge two devices at a time from electrical outlets or what used to be called the cigarette lighters in cars. The company sells charging tips…called iTips…for specific devices. Mollo says it's a challenge to keep up…

"We have a very dedicated organization that as soon as new devices come out we have tips for those. So rather than a new adaptor, you can simply pick up a new adaptor from one of our outlets such as Radio Shack."

Which along with Motorola, has made a strategic investment in the company. You can find more information at iGo.com. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
