THQ's CEO on Next Gen Consoles

Techstination feature for Tuesday, May 31, 2005

A video game veteran says when it comes to the next generation consoles…it's all about the software. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. THQ CEO Brian Farrell has been in the video game business since 1991. He's seen a variety of game platforms come and go. How much of an edge does he think Microsoft will have in releasing the Xbox360 this year…ahead of Sony's Playstation3?

"Well as we've seen in all the generations, it's not about who is first. The real winner is the one that always has the best games. And like every console cycle, the winner will be determined not by who is first or who is most technically advanced, but by who has the best products on their platform." What plans do you have in terms of games for the Xbox360 at launch? "Well our launch strategy for Xbox360 is consistent with our launch strategy over the last several hardware transitions. This is personally my fifth hardware transition. What you want to have a strong new presence on the platform. We have two products we are showing for launch or the launch window which is shortly after launch. Saints Row is one of the products and The Outfit is another. And what differentiates them, that points to our strategy, is they're both completely new games from the ground up. It's not just take an existing product and port the graphics up to next gen."
