Sony's New Focus on Video Conferencing

Techstination feature for Tuesday, June 7, 2005

Sony's new focus on video conferencing. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Sony and a company called GlowPoint have been partnering to create solutions for TV networks and stations to use high speed Internet connections to put events and reporters on the air. Now they are bringing that same kind of technology to businesses and consumers. Eric Murphy is Sony's vice president for Integrated Visual Communications….

"What we're introducing here is Instant Video Everywhere. It's really a Sony branded, user friendly communications service, which is powered by GlowPoint. And our mission really is to make the other V in VOIP, video. Obviously it's a first in a branded consumer experience in the two way video market."

There are a variety of video conferencing solutions available that use the Internet…including some that are free from Microsoft, Yahoo and AOL. But Murphy says Sony believes telecommuters, for instance, need higher quality service…

"There's operators, there's directory assistance, there's call transfer and call hold. These are very unique. In addition to that, there's also video mail and this makes the service much more powerful."

Sony's Instant Video Everywhere service will cost between thirty and forty dollars a month and is based on open standards that will allow users to video conference with people using other services and devices. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
