Microsoft Goes Blackberry Picking

Techstination feature for Friday, June 10, 2005

Microsoft goes Blackberry picking. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Microsoft has introduced new features to its Windows Mobile software…aimed at winning more customers from Research in Motion's Blackberry devices. RIM pioneered the concept of keeping business people and others always connected to their email with wireless pagers and phones. At Microsoft, Peter Knook, senior vice president of the Mobile and Embedded Devices Division…says the latest version of Exchange Server….can keep users of smart phones and Pocket PC phones constantly connected…with their email

"They'll also have a number of new security features. If the device falls into the wrong hands, someone leaves it behind in a taxi, then of course what happens is, the password has to be entered. If that's entered incorrectly, then the data on the device may be removed, obviously protecting it from unauthorized access. So that's one example of the new kinds of features in this feature pack."

In addition to email…what's called direct push technology also links users to their calendar and contacts stored in Outlook on their desktop PCs. Knook says one of the big selling points is…companies…big and small…won't need to spend extra money for middleware to keep the mobile devices connected…

"And that's obviously a big benefit and will mean that people will roll this out very widely in the business environment."

In addition battling Blackberry devices….Microsoft is also chasing PalmOne's Treo handhelds. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
