Techstination feature for Friday, July 1, 2005

Turning your PC into a media center computer. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. If you'd like to use a computer to record TV programs…pausing live shows…much like a Tivo….you don't have to spend a lot of money. If you a computer that's only a couple of years old and have ample hard drive space, CyberLink is selling a solution for under a hundred dollars that includes all of the software you need and a TV tuner card. Assistant VP Michael DeMeyer…

"There's a lot of interest now in this media center area. I think Microsoft's efforts over the last two or three years have generated significant interest and momentum as media center platforms. Of course the challenge for consumers has been, up until now, if you wanted a new media center, you had to go buy a new computer."

Version 4 of PowerCinema, which arrives this summer, includes an FM radio as well. It does not include Microsoft's media center software. CyberLink has also updated its all in one DVD creation and burning package….DVD Solution 4….

"The main differences are additional support for some of the dual layer formats for DVD. And CyberLink DVD Solution is the first product that's certified with all of the compatibility testing and compatibility logos for true living room compatibility on all of the DVD formats. The second thing that's new in this format, or in this release, is support for new LightScribe technology from HP."

CyberLink faces competition from Roxio…which is now owned by Sonic Solutions….and from Nero. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
