Too Many TV Channels? Help From the Web

Techstination feature for Wednesday, July 6, 2005

Too many TV channels? Use the Web as a filter. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. A company called MeeVee, previously known as MyDTV, has made a business out of providing free, personalized TV listings. Instead of the usual grid that viewers have to sift through on their cable or satellite systems…chief marketing officer Michael Raneri says …

"It really stems from a what we call a programming overload. It's this phenomenon experienced by millions of consumers who have access to a multitude of television channels to watch. Simply what we want to do is help them find something to watch. The old surf metaphor on TV with the remote control…really what consumers end up doing is watching maybe 14 to 16 channels."

To sign up, you provide your email address…create a password and enter your zip code….and choose whether you subscribe to cable or satellite. You can have MeeVee send email reminders to you when shows you want to watch are scheduled to air. The company faces lots of competition from giants like Microsoft and Time Warner's AOL….but, Raneri says…

"The primary difference is we have relationships with over 300 networks where we're taking down multimedia content. Show images, video, behind the scenes video."

Do you want to be online while you're watching TV? A survey done this year by a company called BIGResearch found more than 60 percent of broadband users already are doing that. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
