Techstination feature for Friday, July 15, 2005

A pocket sized vehicle navigation system. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. There are lots of portable navigation systems on the market these days…from companies like Garmin, Tom-Tom, Travroute and more. One of the selling points for a new device called EZ Road from Pharos Science and Applications, is its size. VP Rick Sill…

"It allows for somebody to take it with them, whether it be in a briefcase, whether it be in a purse. It's truly portable, lightweight, compact and provides a full suite of navigation information. People can just with the touch of a stylus onto the screen, say they want to go from A to B. "

Maps or stored on SD memory cards. The EZ Road uses the Windows CE operating system…and includes calendar and contact applications….but unfortunately…those programs won't sync with Outlook on a PC. Pharos plans to fix that in a future version, but for now, that limitation may make Pocket PC or SmartPhone navigation systems a better choice. For size and ease of portability, however, the EZ Road lives up to its name. And portable systems have a key advantage over built in navigation equipment…

"If you go with the in vehicle approach, you're going to be spending between 15 hundred and 2 thousand dollars to have it built into your dash.. But then again, it's only going to stay in your car."

The Pharos EZ Road sells for about 500 dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin
