A day late and a dollar short….Dataplay arrives. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Four years ago…tiny postage stamp sized optical discs under the name DataPlay won a best of award at the Consumer Electronics Show. But before the company was able to deliver on the promise….it went bankrupt. But the technology has been resurrected by Ritek…where Carol Warren says….the company is now selling a drive called the TOPY…which uses DataPlay discs…

"Right now the DataPlay discs that we're offering are 512 megabytes. We're planning on issuing a 1 gigabyte disc in September of this year. And basically, it's a write once media, so that people on the go that need to store data, can just record the disc, slip it in your pocket and go."

The miniature drive, which can be powered from a USB port…sells for about 125 dollars. The price includes three DataPlay discs. But because they are not re-writable, they may be a tough sell. USB flash drives and even small portable hard drives have been growing in popularity and falling in price. Still, Ritek believes, there is a place for the once ground breaking technology…

"I believe it's an affordable alternative to the flash drives out there and because of the size of it, you can have an every expandable archive of data with you."
