HomePlug AV on the Horizon

A new standard for networks…that uses the electrical wiring in your home. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The HomePlug standard for using existing wiring for computer networks…has been around for a few years. And while it works fine for most kinds of applications…sharing Internet connections and music and photos….it hasn't provided a big enough pipeline for sharing video files. But a new standard, called HomePlug AV, is poised to change that. Andy Melder is Senior VP at Intellon Corporation….a company that makes chips used in the technology…

"The standard was approved by the HomePlug board of directors. HomePlug AV is the standard that's been developed over the last year and a half. And it really extends the performance of HomePlug technology to the 200 megabit per second class range."

Fast enough to share high definition video files over a home network. Melder says the first products using the technology should begin to arrive during the first few months of next year….followed by a variety of consumer electronics devices with HomePlug AV built in. And while wireless networks have gained in popularity….and certainly won't go away…. wired networks are less prone to interference and can deliver better overall performance.
