Taking Digital Music Along... to the Extreme

Techstination feature for Wednesday, September 28, 2005

Plugging in to that digital music. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. There are lots of companies making all kinds of add on devices and cases for iPods and other digital music players. Some, like a company called SkullCandy, go to extremes…connecting people to their music…whatever they happen to be doing. Company President Rick Alden…

"Music is a big part of the life of those is the surf, skate, snow industry. Music's a big part of everyone's life. And as I exited from a previous company where they had manufactured snowboard boots and bindings, I had a number of ideas on how to integrate audio products into snowboard jackets, into snowboard helmets, into snowboard beanies. Lots of different ways to essentially make my personal day on the mountain better. And rather than just develop for myself, we ended up designing for the mass market."

These days there are SkullCandy MP3 watches…that include voice recorders…and a line of wired backpacks. They include pouches for a cell phone and a music player…..that are wired to a built in amplifier. Speakers and a microphone are built into the straps of the pack….

"We needed these to be completely weather impervious. So we designed a very flat panel, carbon woven speaker panel, which is completely impenetrable to water. So you could pour water on top of it…ride back country snow boarding. You have no fear of damaging any of the components."

Even if you're just walking on campus or taking a Sunday hike. Pricing starts at about 150 dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
