Sprint Rolls Out PPC 6700 PDA Phone

Techstination feature for Thursday, October 20, 2005

You don't have to wait for the next version of Windows Mobile. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Palm, Microsoft and Verizon Wireless have announced the first Treo phone that will include Windows Mobile 5.0 software….but it won't be available until early next year. In the meantime, Sprint has begun selling the PPC-6700….the first Pocket PC Phone Edition device using that software. Sprint's Eric Martin…says the PDA phone marks a number of firsts….

"This is the first phone from Sprint that is EVDO ready. What that means is Sprint is launching its new high speed data network. It also is the first phone from Sprint that has WiFi embedded in it. And it also is a phone that has Bluetooth."
And Sprint, says Martin, will allow customers who pay for data plans, to use the EVDO phone as a modem for laptop computers. The WiFi capability, means the device can be used to browse the Web or connect to email, at high speeds without using a cell phone connection at all. A full QWERTY keyboard slides out from the side of the phone…which also has a built in 1.3 megapixel camera and camcorder. It has a slot for mini-SD memory cards for storing pictures, music and other data. PDA phones, especially new models, tend to be pricey. This one is no exception. The PPC 6700 with a contract from Sprint….sells for about 480 dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
