Flexible Photo Sharing Site

Techstination feature for Monday, November 14, 2005

A flexible way to share photos. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. With higher megapixel cameras coming down in price to two or three hundred dollars, one of the problems users face, is how to share their pictures when the files are so large. Many email accounts have restrictions on file attachment sizes. And some photo sharing services on line…downsize pictures. A site called Smugmug.com, that places no limits on the sharing of high quality pictures has been winning fans…largely by word of mouth. General manager Andy Williams…about a hundred thousand photo enthusiasts, including some professionals, are using the site…

"A lot of sites, like Kodak for example, are mostly about the prints. And they want you to upload photos and then they make it easy for you to go ahead and print. Our focus is on world class presentation and sharing. We do also offer the ability to order prints from your galleries."

While Kodak's EasyShare and others are free, your own Smugmug site costs thirty dollars a year…for as many photos as you care to add. You can keep your pictures private, share them with friends and family, or with everyone. And using the site has an added benefit….providing a safe place for back-ups of all of those memories…

"We do not change that original file in any way, shape or form. And so it is the same file that exists on your computer."

A free trial of the service is available at Smugmug.com. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
