Help in Finding What You Need on the Net

Techstination feature for Wednesday, June 23, 1999

Easier ways to get the information you want on the net. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. Whatever subjects interest you, you'll find all you need to know on the Internet. But some of the best information is out there in what are called news groups and setting up the software you need to participate in the groups isn't always so easy. That's where a web site called talkway.com comes in. Talkway gives you menus to find the subjects that interest you and an easy to use doorway to the news groups...

"Well Talkway is a website, a free service that enables people to find others with common interests online. To exchange ideas, get information, get advice on virtually any imaginable topic. There are about 25 million people participating in these groups and about 45 thousand different topics to choose from, from food to fashion to finance, anything you can imagine is there."

Talkway VP Carlos Tribino. News groups are like big community discussions. Some people ask questions. Some give answers. Another way to find the info you need is through mail lists. There are thousands of them you can sign up for... or create your own through a site called onelist.com. Onelist CEO Mark Fletcher...

"We now send out up to 20 million email messages per day to over 4 million users. And we have over 165 thousand mailing lists. So it's a real populist phenomenon. People really like using the service. It's a great way for people to communicate."

And that's what the Internet is really all about.
