Hot Tech Toys for Kids

Techstination feature for Wednesday, December 7, 2005

Hot tech toys for kids. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. What do kids want for the holidays? Turns out the things on their lists…aren't so different from what their parents want. iPods, cell phones, digital cameras. The trend hasn't gone un-noticed by the big toy makers. At Mattel, vice president Phil Jackson says the company's Vidster digital camcorder is designed for kids as young as eight…

"Well kids are always looking for what their older siblings ..and they're looking for what aspirational products are in the marketplace, like an iPod for instance or a video camera or a digital camera. What we've been able to do is take all of the features you would expect in an adult video camera and deliver it to kids in a more durable format. And parents like it because kids aren't messing around with their products and kids like it because it gives them the same results and same performance, if you will, of an adult version."

That may be stretching things abit. The quality of the video isn't what you would get from a DV camcorder. But still, for under 80 dollars, the Vidster, with a digital zoom lens and SD memory card slot is suitable for youngsters. It can connect directly to a TV or to a computer for editing. It ships with software from Muvee for editing….

"But it's compatible with a variety of other software editing programs including Final Cut Pro and iMovie and almost every software program out there."

Mattel has competition….from Hasbro…with its VCam Now…and others. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
