Sony's PSP for the Holidays

Techstination feature for Monday, December 12, 2005

Can't find an Xbox 360….Sony hopes you'll pick up a PSP. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Microsoft's new Xbox 360 may be the most in demand game machine this holiday season…..but finding one seems to be all but impossible. Enter Sony's PlayStation Portable or PSP. The handheld machine that can play movies, browse the Web over a wireless network, display photos and play games…is winning lots of fans. Sony Computer Entertainment's John Koller…says there are more games available for it than you'll find for the new Xbox…

"Through the holidays we expect 70 plus. And as we go through 2006, that number should expand quite a bit. A lot of publishers are starting to jump on. We had a number of publishers that wanted to jump on at launch and then a number that wanted to wait for the installed base to come to a certain point. We're at a point now where a lot of publishers are kind of at that tipping point where…okay, it's now a viable product. So you're going to see not only a really strong line up this holiday, but you'll see a lot more in 2006 on the gaming front. The movie front is already huge, we're at 210 plus movies that have launched."

A recent update from Sony added a Web browser. And there's also a new Location Free Player device….for 330 dollars or so….that allows the PSP to act as a portable TV connecting wirelessly to a cable or satellite box…or even to a DVD player. The PSP itself sells for about 250 dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
