Techstination feature for Tuesday, December 20, 2005

New PCs in the new year. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It may not be good news for consumers who have been buying new computers for the holidays. Intel is on the verge of releasing new technology for both desktop and notebook machines. The first to arrive, in January, will be dual core Centrino processors for notebooks. Erik Reid is director of marketing in the mobile platform group….

"We're introducing the first mobile optimized dual core processor, code named Yonah. In addition, we're introducing a new chipset that delivers the next generation integrated graphics and enhanced performance on the platform. And also an all new wireless solution as well. The combination of these three components will deliver outstanding benefits to both consumers and business users."

On the desktop side…what Intel calls Viiv will arrive. It is designed to work with and improve the media center edition of Windows. The company's Brian Fravel….

"What we've done is, it's a combination of Intel's latest processors, it's some new software technologies on the platform. Every platform will have instant on and off enabled so you just press one button, it will turn on and off like a TV. And then what we've done is also worked with an ecosystem of software and hardware vendors and set criteria and then we validate every Viiv platform."

Intel, whose processors run 80 percent of the world's computers, hopes the strategy will help it fend off competition from AMD. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
