A cordless phone system…with a wireless camera? Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Cordless phones aren't exactly a sexy new technology. But they are learning some new tricks. At Motorola's connected home solutions group, Bill Taylor says…

"The next generation of cordless phones allow you to connect other devices to them. So like you would have handsets in various rooms that you would have the convenience of picking up the handsets from the bedroom or down in the living room or in the entertainment room, you can now start to add with the Motorola System Phone, the ability to answer your cell phone if you have it docked in one of our docking stations from any number of locations you might place that. Or have a camera located in the baby's room or front door so you can pick up any of the color handsets and view who might be at the front door or see how the baby's doing up in the baby room."

Up to eight devices can be connected to the system base station. The add-ons like the cell docking station and the camera monitor each cost 99 dollars. And in the near future…

"The future modules that we're in the process of developing for the current model of phone is to allow it to have a VOIP module. So now you can connect it to the Internet through a VOIP service provider like Vonage or CallVantage."

Motorola faces competition from Uniden and others…in the next generation cordless phone business. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
