Flat Screens With New Features

Techstination feature for Thursday, January 5, 2006

Flat screens….with new features. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. January is a big month for buying big screen TVs….with sports fans lining up at the line of scrimmage before the Super Bowl. And at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas….companies are showing off models with new capabilities. LG Electronics…the number one maker of LCD screens….has LCDs and plasmas with built in hard drives that can record high definition or standard definition shows. They also have built in digital cable card slots……so the only external box you may need hooked up to it….would be a DVD player….or perhaps an Xbox 360. LG VP Bob Perry….says the new models will arrive in stores this month….

"These models with the built in hard disk drive recorders will start at about four thousand dollars. And depending on screen size and other features, will go up to about fifty five hundred dollars. It's a very exciting time in this business because last year we saw retail prices decline dramatically and so it became more affordable for most consumers. In 2006, retail prices will probably decline gradually throughout the year, but probably no more than twenty percent."

And that should enable even more people to fit those big flat screens into their budgets. LG has plenty of competition…from Panasonic, Sony, Samsung and others. And the race to add cool new features to set models is just getting started. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
