Tube Based TVs... Not Dead Yet

Techstination feature for Friday, January 6, 2006

Flat screens are big…but tube based TVs aren't dead yet. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The world's biggest maker of TVs, China's TTE, which owns the RCA and Thomson brands, doesn't see picture tube based or CRT sets disappearing anytime soon. Even with the coming switch to digital signals by TV broadcasters, TTE executive VP Greg Bosler says….

"We think we will be in CRT for the foreseeable future. Today as you compare CRT value and price versus a flat panel or LCD, there's still a significant difference in CRT. And take 27 inch for example, the ration is still about 3 to 1 in terms of what a name brand 27 inch LCD product would cost versus a CRT product on the market. CRT provides a great value. It can give you digital picture quality and the picture performance is very good. It's very mature technology."

The company is updating the sets with digital technology…selling standard definition digital TVs for under 300 dollars. While they won't give you a high definition picture….the sets do deliver DVD quality pictures from digital broadcasts. In the meantime….TTE, like rivals LG, Sharp and Samsung, is busy building a new plant to turn out more LCD high definition TVs. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
