"Well I think people don't realize that search quality from the leader has not improved over the last few years. And yet there are ways to make it a lot better. It's no where near as good as it should be. Search should improve a lot, you shouldn't have to go on a treasure hunt to find the information that's interesting to you."
At Google….which has announced a new video downloading service with CBS and the NBA as partners….CEO Eric Schmidt gave us this response to Gates' comments…
"He is the challenger in that space so he can make whatever claims he wants. I think if you look at the level of innovation that Google has done…we did a summary for the board of what we did last year… in terms of the rate of product and the number of technologies…the expansion of the index, the quality of the personalized search, the international search, the list is phenomenal."
While Schmidt says his company has no plans to introduce a Google PC, which had been the subject of some speculation, it is offering a package of free software that includes photo editing, anti-virus and anti-spyware, the Firefox browser, Google Earth and Google's Desktop search tool.
