Palm's New Treo... With Windows

Techstination feature for Wednesday, January 18, 2006

Palm's new Treo…with Windows Mobile. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Palm's new 700W….arrived this month…the first device made by the company that does not use the Palm operating system. If you are used to the Windows operating system…the Start button…the Windows Media player…and Outlook….it may be the phone/PDA you've been waiting for. If you've always loved the simplicity of the Palm OS…you may miss some of that ease of use. One button access to your contacts or calendar. Will it be the best selling Treo? Palm CEO Ed Colligan …

"Certainly with the support of Microsoft and Verizon… we have a significant amount of resources to be able to bring it to the market and certainly make the marketplace aware of it. Whether it'll be our biggest seller, I don't know yet." Will you also create a non-phone device, a regular Palm, with Microsoft software? "No, I don't believe so. I never want to say never, that's a hard one to say. But the future of mobile computing is wireless." But what kind of future do you see for the Palm OS, with PalmSource now owned by Access of Japan? How long will it survive? "Access has been a very innovative company. For the last ten years, they've been in the business doing software for wireless mobile devices. Palm OS products are in the hands of more than 35 million people. So I expect it will continue to survive for quite some time."
