"These tools will work together, they'll be designed together, to make that experience of sharing content the best and easiest in the business. And at the same time be able to take content traditionally associated with the PC … like digital photos and music…and access those on the premium device in your home…your big screen TV."
DirecTV is looking to add new capability as it faces the prospect of more intense competition from phone companies…such as AT&T and Verizon….which are testing fiber optic cables for new digital video services. Carey says…
"Who's our primary competitor today….it's the cable companies. I think there are question marks about how successful and ultimately how committed the phone companies remain as they try to build the business. I think it is still not clear what are they going to bring to the market place that's going to enable them to capture share." Do you have doubts that they can succeed? "Yeah, sure. I think it's going to be a tough haul for them. They don't have expertise in the video marketplace. You've got pretty good competitors with us and the cable companies and we're both getting better and better."
