Better Pictures and Music on Cell Phones

Techstination feature for Wednesday, March 8, 2006

Better pictures and music on cell phones. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Sony Ericsson…..is leveraging the Sony half of the partnership….to deliver new handsets with better cameras and music capability. The K790 will be the first phone with the Sony Cyber-shot brand on it….and will feature 3.2 megapixels, a Xenon Flash…and a BestPic mode. Sony Ericsson Americas President Najmi Jarwala says the phone will link to a new partnership with Google to allow photos to be sent to Blogs hosted by Google….

"The ability of someone to take a photograph and then upload it to a blogging Web site and then being able to share it is going to be seamless. And I think that's going to drive the whole phenomenon that has really taken off."

One issue at the start however…is that the K790 will be a higher end phone….too expensive for many young people who are the chief users of blogging sites. Sony Ericsson is also expanding its Walkman line of phones. The W300 will include an FM radio…an MP3 player….and a 256 megabyte Memory Stick Micro card..

"Last year when we introduced the Walkman brand, there were clearly so many other music enabled phones in the market place. But the Walkman branded phones established a new high, a new benchmark."

The phones compete with the iTunes models being sold by Motorola….and others from Nokia, Samsung and LG. Sony Ericsson says, while prices are set by carriers, the W300 should be the most affordable of the Walkman models. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
