Face Recognition for Digital Photos

Techstination feature for Monday, March 13, 2006

Face recognition for digital photos. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Face recognition is being used in a variety of applications these days….mostly having to do with security. A company called Riya is planning to use it to help folks sift through all of those images they are taking with digital cameras. CEO Munjal Shah…

"We came to this idea out of our own personal need. I have 37 thousand photos and like most people, they're all named what the camera named them. DSC009.jpg and DSC0010.jpg. And I said there's got to be a better way. And we started saying what if we use face recognition to figure out who is in the photographs because that's what we all care about the most.

The site is launching in beta….and to use it, you'll have to upload pictures to the Riya site and do a little training for each individual you want recognized…

"Upload your photos to Riya and you can make them public or private. And then you have to train Riya, say here's a few pictures of my grandma, here's what she looks like. Here's what my daughter looks like. And then it will go through the rest of your photographs and find most of the pictures of them, mark them and make them searchable to you."

The plan eventually is to allow you to download the tags onto your PC. Riya..spelled R-I-Y-A…will be free to use…supported by advertising. The most difficult part, says Shah…is uploading all the photos. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
