Is There Room for Another Search Engine

Techstination feature for Monday, March 20, 2006

Is there room for another search engine? Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Google, MSN and Yahoo are the big guns in the world of Internet search…and there are others as well…ranging from Ask.com to DogPile. A relatively new entrant….Accoona.com which counts former Compaq CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer and chess champion Garry Kasparov among its investors….thinks it can win Internet users over. CEO Stuart Kauder…

"Search is here to stay. The question is where is it going and how can Accoona better help users get to the information that they're looking for as quickly and efficiently as possible. So what we've come up with is one, our artificial intelligence which understands the meaning of a query beyond a direct keyword match."

While Accoona aspires to be a valuable search tool for everyone….one of its key advantages for now is in business related searches. It has partnered with Dun and Bradstreet to return results that would normally be available to D&B customers. Of course Dun and Bradstreet also sells complete reports through the link. Another unique feature…is what the site calls SuperTargeting….which allows you to narrow your search down to produce better results. How does Accoona hope to make money? Pretty much the same way Google does…

"It is an advertising based model. We are launching other products."

Accoona…from the Swahili phrase meaning no worries….is partly owned by China Daily…perhaps giving it an edge in a market being chased by Google and Microsoft. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
