Going After the Big PC Makers... Velocity Micro

Techstination feature for Tuesday, March 28, 2006

Going after the big computer makers. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Velocity Micro is a small, 40 person operation, trying to sell computers not by being the cheapest….but by promising that one of its support people based at the company's headquarters in Richmond, Virginia….can be reach 24 hours a day, seven days a week. CEO Randy Copeland….

"Here all of our call center staff is former employees from our productions department. They graduate to the support staff. And it's all done right here in our building in Richmond, Virginia by technicians who have built systems in the past. So when you call in, you're going to get somebody who picks up the phone who can help you right off the bat. So there's no big cue, there's no big tier levels, so we can provide customers with immediate information to get them going."

Copeland has been putting computers together for about 20 years…first for friends and family…then for local customers. Now Velocity Micro is selling through some select Best Buy stores…and online. Systems range from 800 dollars….up to … well there are some customers who go to the extreme….

"We've sold personal computers to individuals that were over 20 thousand dollars. Typically, those are going to be over the top in specifications. They'll have two processors and six hard drives and 8 or 12 gigs of RAM."

For that kind of money, you should be able to drive it. While some may point out it is simple for a company selling far fewer computers than Dell or HP to provide better service. Copeland says it isn't a matter of size, it's a matter of philosophy. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
