A Speakerphone for Skype

Techstination feature for Friday, March 31, 2006

A speakerphone for Skype. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. More and more people are discovering how easy it is to use Skype or other free Internet voice and video conferencing services. And as they do, more companies are making devices that make the experience better. Motorola makes a Bluetooth headset, Linksys has a cordless phone, Actiontec makes a speakerphone. But when it comes to sound quality, ClearOne's new Chat 50, offers technology similar to what they use in their higher end office speaker phone systems. Product marketing director Kurt Olsen…

"It's really a personal audio conferencing device. And the way we've designed it, its actually set up to work with a wide variety of devices. I can connect it for example to my PC via a USB cable. And with that then, I enable 2 way communications over things like Skype, AOL Instant Message chat feature. Gaming. There's a lot of online gaming now with the team speak feature where I can chat with other players as I play the game."

Using a cable sold separately, the Chat 50 can also be used as a high quality speakerphone for cell phones. It features true full duplex capability…meaning the sound doesn't cut out when two people are talking at once…

"Most speakerphones that people use do not have that capability. They're half duplex. So it's one way or the other. Either the other person's talking or I'm talking but you don't get both in two way communication."

The quality and versatility set the device apart. So does the 150 dollar price. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
