In Development for Years... Elder Scrolls: Oblivion

Techstination feature for Wednesday, April 19, 2006

It's been in development for years. Bethesda Softworks is finally out with Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It's the latest version of a top selling game series. Unlike many other games for PCs and the Xbox 360….Elder Scrolls: Oblivion is designed for single players. Bethesda VP Pete Hines….

"The Elder Scrolls has always been a single player game and to be honest with you, we felt that there was a lot that we could do there that hadn't been done..that gave us an opportunity to create a really fantastic single player only experience. And multi-player actually adds a lot of challenges both technically and design-wise in terms of what the player is going to do, what you're putting on the screen. It really is a completely different kind of experience than a single player. So we felt like we should focus on single player. Do what we do really well and make it the best possible game it could be."

The title…rated for teens and above…is the kind role playing gamers get lost in. And the new high definition graphics capabilities of the Xbox 360 help to draw them in even more. The game required so much work that Bethesda couldn't get it finished in time for the launch of the Microsoft console…as it had originally intended. Hines says if you haven't played the Elder Scrolls games before…it doesn't matter…

"We actually make every game stand on its own. We don't want anybody to have to have played the previous ones to enjoy the next one."

Just make sure you have lots of time on your hands. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
