Channel Surfing on a Cell Phone

Techstination feature for Monday, April 24, 2006

Channel surfing on a cell phone. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Wireless carriers are taking different approaches to bringing TV to cell phones. Verizon Wireless has opted to use technology called MediaFlo developed by Qualcomm….which essentially will send channels to phones using airwaves that are different from cell phone signals. The idea is not to tie up the cellular network with video. Verizon Wireless CEO Denny Strigl says consumers will hear more about it by the end of the year…

"There are no doubts in my mind that at the appropriate time, it will be ready. It will be conveniently priced for our customers and this will be a good market for us." How convinced are you that consumers are going to want TV, real TV, on cell phones? "I am convinced that there is an opportunity. What is the size of that opportunity? I'm not convinced exactly what the size of that opportunity is. I think that there is currently a very big opportunity for music, for broadband access services. And we'll work through how large the opportunity is on broadcast services, but I don't know that, Fred, at this moment." It sounds like you have some doubts. "I have no doubts that there is opportunity. That there are people who will want to do that. But the size of that market I'm not certain yet."
