Can Sony Hold Onto the Video Game Console Crown

Techstination feature for Monday, May 22, 2006

Can Sony hold onto the video game console crown. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. With more than a hundred million of its PlayStation 2 consoles sold…Sony dominated Microsoft and Nintendo in the last generation. But by the time Sony ships its new PlayStation 3 in November….Microsoft will have had a year and ten million unit head start with the Xbox 360. And Nintendo says it will have its next generation machine…the Wii… in stores before the end of the year. But the head of Sony Computer Entertainment America, Kaz Hirai, says with the inclusion of the powerful Cell processor…and a Blu-ray high definition DVD player…the PS3 will dominate again….

"I think that the success of any console is going to depend on the software content that is going to be put into the system itself. And I think that we are going to be coming out with a variety of compelling entertainment content for the PlayStation 3 that is going to ensure once gain that we are going to take the leadership position in this next generation, as we have done with PlayStation and PlayStation 2, which, by the way, were not the first consoles to market in each of those generations." Will it be a closer battle this time? "We're very confident in being able to keep the market share that we've established for ourselves over the past 12 years."

But some of the biggest game makers think with prices of 500 and 600 dollars for the two different versions of the PlayStation 3….it will be a closer race in the console business this time around. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
