Fewer Games on Next Gen Consoles Likely

Techstination feature for Monday, June 5, 2006

You may find fewer games for those next generation video game consoles. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Microsoft's Xbox 360….will be joined by Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii by the end of the year. But buyers may not find the broad assortment of games that they're used to seeing. The reason…game makers such as Infogrammes…owner of the Atari brand…are finding development costs for the PS3 and 360….with their high definition graphics…too expensive. Infogrammes CEO Bruno Bonnell…

"On the PlayStation 3, we've announced that Alone in the Dark would be one of our leading titles. It's a very complex machine to develop on and we just want to make sure we deliver the best. So we've reduced again the scope of what we want to do. The philosophy would be let's go back to basics of game play and invest wisely in less titles but more deeply."

At the world's biggest video game company, Electronic Arts, VP Jeff Brown says…

"Smaller companies presumably are going to make fewer games and in some instances, no games, in the first year of the PlayStation 3 or the first year of the Xbox 360 because they simply can't afford to do the R&D."

That, Brown says, will give Electronic Arts with all of its resources…an even bigger edge. It may also lead to more smaller game companies and game studios being acquired. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
