Motorola's New Q

Techstination feature for Wednesday, June 7, 2006

Motorola's new Q. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Motorola has entered the PDA phone business that has been dominated by Palm's Treo…and Research in Motion's Blackberry. And the strategy …was to make device as thin as Motorola's Razr….and trim down the price as well. Product manager Jason Gordon…

"Really when you take a step back and look at the industry, we really saw a void, kind of between the traditional phone and other Qwerty devices that have been on the market that have been focused more on the enterprise and the high end mobile professional. We thought that we could deliver an experience that really met the needs of a larger group of people. And we think the Q does that. It combines the best of a great phone with a form factor and design that you could fit in your pocket or take out on a Friday night when you're having dinner and not be embarrassed that it's taking up half of your pocket. And also at a really competitive price. Verizon Wireless has priced this at 199 for a two year service agreement."

The Q uses Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5 smart phone software….has integrated Bluetooth….but unlike the new Treo 700P, can't be used as high speed data network modem for a PC. It uses a wheel for navigation instead of a touch screen. Gordon calls it an advantage…

"If you're a busy professional going through the airport with a garment bag and a roller cart…or whether you're a parent holding a two year old… the ability to use a device with one hand without having to touch the screen."

Keep in mind the voice and data plan Verizon Wireless is pairing the Q with will cost you more than a typical voice service plan alone. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
