A Blu-ray Burner in a Notebook PC

Techstination feature for Thursday, June 8, 2006

A Blu-ray burner…in a notebook PC. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Sony calls it the Vaio AR Premium….and it is a notebook like no other for a variety of reasons. Vice president of Vaio product marketing Mike Abary says the laptop with a high gloss black finish….features 400 gigabytes of hard drive space…a high definition….17 inch screen….a TV tuner and a Blu-ray, high definition, DVD player and recorder…

"In addition to the Blu-ray optical drive that we've integrated into this notebook, we've also integrated an HDMI port so that users could also utilize it as a secondary living room device where they're playing back Blu-ray content through a larger display like a high definition television."

The price is best of too. About 35 hundred dollars…when it arrives around the end of the month. Rival Toshiba is selling notebook PCs with drives using the HD DVD format for high definition discs….but it doesn't include the ability to create your own high definition DVDs as the new Vaio does. In the meantime, Sony has also announced a new ultraportable PC….the Vaio UX. While the one pound pocket sized PC has a touch screen… ….

"We've actually included a keyboard that basically hides underneath the LCD screen."

The price… about 18 hundred dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
