The Return of Al Lowe

Techstination feature for Tuesday, June 13, 2006

The return of Al Lowe. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Maybe he didn't invent humor in video games, but then again, maybe he did. Al Lowe…was the creator of the Leisure Suit Larry video game series…..from 1987 through 1999…during the glory days of Sierra Online….

"I wrote 27 games over 16 years for Sierra Online which I think is still a record for the same publisher for this one author. And I retired and what I found out was I'm a lot better game designer than I am golfer. And when Ken Wegrzyn approached me with the chance to do a new game and to form a new company that would be the publisher of the product, I was really excited."

And so iBase Entertainment….was created….and Lowe has been busily helping to build a new game…. Sam Suede: Undercover Exposure...

"We don't want to do the same thing that's already out there. If you want a shooter, there's plenty of them on the shelf. If you want a driving game, there's plenty of those out there. If you want an RPG, there's plenty. What we're trying to do is something new, and so what we came up with was an action comedy, which is a new genre. I think if you look on the shelf right now, there's zero. We hope to make it one."

If past form holds true…the game will be silly, juvenile, bawdy …and probably fun, something Lowe points out is often lacking in games today. Fans will have to wait. iBase says that first title will be out in 2007…for consoles, handhelds and PCs. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
