Can a Watch Help You Get a Better Night's Sleep?

Can a watch help you get a better night's sleep? Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It's called the Sleeptracker, a fairly ordinary looking watch, that is designed, according to inventor Lee Loree, to wake the wearer up at a time when he or she will feel most refreshed…

"Originally I had an idea to try to wake people at the optimal time when they're in as light a stage of sleep as possible so the transition from being asleep to awake would be easier and simpler to do. That is the key driver of the business right now with Sleeptracker. Sleeptracker also monitors and records your sleep so that you can take a snapshot day to day and compare how well you're sleeping."

The idea is…you set the alarm on the watch….and then set a window…within a thirty minute or less range before the alarm time. If the watch senses movement during that window…the alarm will go off. Loree doesn't claim to be a sleep expert…and whether the alarm on the watch is enough to awaken you…seems to be debatable. Loree says it does work for most people… and

"When you are in an optimal time to be awoken, it takes very little stimuli to awake the user. In fact, Sleeptracker is designed to wake you but not your sleeping partner."

The price, about a hundred fifty dollars. The Sleeptracker can't replace the simple concept of getting enough sleep…but the idea of not being jostled out of deep sleep by a big buzzer by the bed is appealing. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
