The Security Software Shootout

Techstination feature for Tuesday, June 20, 2006

The security software shootout. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Long time makers of security software….Symantec, McAfee, Check Point and others….are facing new competition from Microsoft. Microsoft's OneCare officially costs fifty dollars a year to protect three computers. But it can be found online for as little as 20 dollars. At Check Point, which owns the ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite, general manager Laura Yecies says…

"To be quite honest, what I see with their introduction is a group of technologies that has existed in the industry for two to three years. It's a nice service, but they're really protecting against the threats of two to three years ago, major virus attacks and the major worms. The bigger threats from the insidious attacks. The rootkits, the keyloggers … that's where you need something like our operating system firewall which is a full behaviorally based system that could much more comprehensively prevent any malware from getting on your system."

One of the highlights of version 6.5 of ZoneAlarm's Internet Security Suite….is a new online identity protection center…

"we have service where you can provide your credit card numbers into this credit card watch service and we literally watch and monitor on the Internet in the black market, in the places where card numbers tend to be traded."

The price, about fifty dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
