Digitizing the entire U.S. Census. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It was a job undertaken by the leading genealogy research Web site, Ancestry.com. Chief executive Tim Sullivan…

"We are announcing the completion…the complete digitization… of the United States Federal Census. An effort which began in the year 2000. It's a collection of over 500 million names. It's an extraordinary effort that combined some incredible technology and over six million hours of human work to digitize and put all of this information online."

Sullivan, who used to head the Match.com online dating service, says the effort involved about 15 hundred people around the world. And what it means is subscribers to Ancestry.com…will find more records available than ever before that can help them trace the roots of their families. That's of interest to growing numbers of people. Online resources are a big reason why…

"Forever, until the Internet, to do family history research one had to travel to a family history library or to the National Archives itself. Now we have put, on Ancestry.com, online, over five billion names.
