A Bluetooth Headset That Does Double Duty

Techstination feature for Tuesday, July 11, 2006

A Bluetooth headset that does double duty. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Plantronics, one of the best known names in office telephone headsets, is out with the Voyager 510 USB Bluetooth Headset. I simulanteously connects to Bluetooth enabled cell phones….and to Internet based phone software…from Skype or other services. And what sets the device apart from competitors…is the USB dongle that plugs into a notebook or desktop PC to enable communications. It makes the Bluetooth set up….more simple than ever before. Product manager Matt Kramer…

"With other solutions, you've got to actually load a Bluetooth stack on your PC which can be somewhat cumbersome. There's software to load, you've got to configure the software and then you've got to configure it specifically to work with Bluetooth audio. So for an enthusiast, it's probably something that they're willing to go through. But for your general user, it's a pretty large hurdle to get past. So we wanted to remove that step altogether. So we embedded the Bluetooth stack on the dongle itself. The PC or Windows only sees it as a USB audio device and nothing else, so it's plug and play, 100 percent plug and play. I pop it in, PC recognizes it, it sets itself as the default audio device, and it's pre-paired. So it automatically is linked up with the headset that it was shipped with."

Sort of like a cavity free Bluetooth system….that lets you switch between Internet calls through your PC…and your mobile phone. The list price…about two hundred dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
