TV on cell phones. You haven't seen anything yet. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Mobile carriers are already offering video clips and some live TV services on cell phones. MobiTV has been selling service through a variety of carriers …and includes a channel lineup that's heavy on news and sports. But that TV content can be a burden to the wireless capacity of the carriers. So they have been testing two new competing technologies…that will send separate TV signals to cell phones that don't bog down the data networks. One is MediaFlo from Qualcomm. Gina Lombardi is president of MediaFlo USA…which has signed up Verizon Wireless as its first customer…
"So we're in negotiations with all the major content providers and things are going well. Everybody wants to be first. And now the attorneys are in the middle of dotting the Is and crossing the Ts and hopefully in the next ninety days there'll be announcements on who the initial launch partners for content will be." What kinds of content are you aiming for? "So we want to be sure that we reach a broad number of users across the nation. So we don't want to just have the sports fanatic or the young person. We want to have an offering that has news and sports and entertainment and kids entertainment."
More on the competition in an upcoming report. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
